Week 6 Extra Reading Diary: Tibetan Folk Tales

This week I am once again keeping with the theme of fairy/folk tales and am focusing on Tibetan Folk Tales for my extra reading diary post this week. Once again, feel free to ignore at will.

Wits over strength. Companions to conquer fear. Fear is stronger than physical strength. Universal language.

If you are without kindness, you will meet no kindness in return. When the world was young. Time when everyone understands everyone else. Very meager living. Meditating on the questions of life as well as the little things (and animals). False friends who acted falsely and stole from the lama. Found them out, and punished them by cutting off their whiskers, ears, and tails. When you are found in bad company you are judged as guilty as they. Disassociate yourself from bad influences.

Just king. Two poor men in his kingdom who worked very and and were also good men. An accident leaves two men caught in an argument. King couldn’t decide so he faulted the donkey and sent it to prison. He also tried to imprison the rock that was also found to be at fault. Causes a spectacle and he charges a small fee form all of the patrons; the money was given to the man who lost his oil and all was well. Interesting and innovative way to deal with a problem.

Companionship payed for by hospitality. First companion jealous by the addition of another. Mother preached of love and equality even though they came from different backgrounds and species. Importance of friendship. Pitting one friend against the other out of jealousy. Breeding suspicion and anger. Enemies from miscommunication. Talked it out and made plans to get revenge on the fox. They killed him.

Keep your promises. Another story from a far off time before language delineation occurred. Different creatures trapped together. They were saved from a man and promised him favors. He did not believe any of them really except for the human. The crow kept his word and brought him a stolen necklace. The human found out and turned him into the queen. Rat brought him food. Snake also repayed him. Don’t judge by appearances.

Falling for a trap. Being killed instantly. All the robbers wanted to have the meat but none of them wanted to actually be responsible for doing the work. Planned to kill the robbers who didn’t do their share. The other robbers felt the same way and planned to kill the others. They all died. Greedy when there is obvious plenty. Don’t do what you aren’t fitted for.

Painter and carpenter enemies. Battle of wits. False heaven, real heaven.

In birth and death there is no fear, and in fear there is no doubt. All alone in the world; poor. Overheard the gods and goddesses of the forest predicting the live of a princess. He was to marry her and he took offence. So he searched her out and killed her (thought he did). Self fulfilling prophecy. Can never get away from our destinies.

Desire for companionship as present as the sun. Terrified of his companion but afraid to admit it. Ghost afraid of wind through the barley. Weird.

Demons in disguise. Deceit. Overtaken by beauty, missed the fact that she was not as she seemed. All the brothers died off one by one. Revenge and games of wit.
