Week 13 Reading Diary A: Dante's Inferno

Image Information: The 9 circles of hell, Phd edition. Source: PhD Comics
Wood full of fear. Drove me to where the sun in silent. Asking man in the depths to have pity on him. Answers him and asks why he has come back. Virgil as his guide through hell. Peace in the flames, because it brings them closer to the blessed.

Gate in which all uncertainty must be left behind. Where the sad people have lost the good of the intellect. Spiritually neutral and their punishment. Lived without praise, without blame—misery. Have place neither in hell nor in heaven. No hope of death. Envious of every other fate. Charon the ferryman of the Acheron. Carried the dead from one shore to another—life to death.

First region of hell. Edge. People who lived before Christianity and not members of the Christian faith. No sound except sound of people sighing. Have not sinned, but were not baptized. Did not worship god correctly.

Meeting with all of these great minds who came before Christianity. Made a sixth among the wise. Spoke about things of which it is best to be silent. Comes to a region where nothing shines.

Focus a lot on Francesca, woman who betrayed her husband and had an affair with her husband’s younger brother. Husband stabbed the two to death. Second circle of hell for carnal sinners. Examination of crimes upon entrance, judges, and sends the guilty as far down as they deserve. Spirit confesses everything to Minos. Dante on a destined journey. No greater pain than to remember happy times in times of misery.

Third circle for the gluttonous. Cerberus—three headed dog. Fourth circle for the avaricious (greedy). ‘Pape Satan, pape Satan aleppe.’ More people in the fourth than elsewhere. Useless giving and useless keeping. Money can never give peace to weary souls.

Fortune personified. Ignorance so great. Fate as incomprehensible. Can’t stay too long in one circle. Can see the fifth circle from river Styx. Fifth circle for the wrathful.

Infernal City of Dis which contains the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth circles of hell. Guarded by fallen angels and the furies. Very rare journey.

Pagan guardians. Sixth circle are heretics. Lots of torment.

  1. I had to smile when I saw you had PhD comics here, Amanda! That is in my big folder of fun stuff to put in the announcements, and I'll be using it next week since a lot of people will probably pick Dante as their reading. Isn't PhD comics fabulous? So much goodness! :-)
